Locations

I chose this location because it is very eye catching and the woods conveys a lonely feeling, this being the theme to my music video.

Tessa Perkins- Representation Theory/ Stereotypes

What is a stereotype? A stereotype is when someone/ a group is given a label based on what they look like/ how they act, and then conform to certain ideologies of the group.

We stereotype people to put them into catagories they look like they fit in/ we understand stereotypes to fit into society. There are stereotypes within a stereotype for example, a 'Geek' could be 'cool' or 'boring'. Stereotypes are based on media expectations.

Stereotyping is not a simple process and contains a number of assumptions that can be challenged. Stereotypes are not always bad, they can be held about ones own group and they are not always false.

Different groups of people in institutions (stereotypes).
e.g. Youths- 'hoodies' riots in London in the media which were photographed. Now all hoodies are seen as bad people.
Youths- GCSE results are good so positive things are heard in society.
The same stereotype is now seen in two different ways, a positive and a negative.

.People assume that stereotypes are directed to the lower class which is not true.
.We base our understandings on the things we don't know about.
.Stereotypes can develop, once you have a stereotype its hard to change.
.Stereotypes must have some truth otherwise they wouldn't exist.
.Stereotypes can be wrong/ negative concepts.
.People will hold stereotypes.
.Peoples behaviour will change towards a stereotype.

Star Theory-representation theory

Richard Dyer

The idea that icons and celebrities are constructed by institutions for financial reasons and are built to target a specific audience or group of people.
Dyers theory can be broken down into 3 sections:

1.Audience and institutions
2.Constructions
3.Hegemony

Dyer states that: 'stars are commoditites that are produced by institutions'.

'A star is a constructed image, represented across a range of media and mediums'.

'Stars represent and embody certain ideologies'.

Audience and institutions: Stars are made to make money. Audiences want to consume what they think is the ideal (or is made to believe is the ideal.)
Institutions modify the stars image around the target audience . They make a star based on what they think the audience want.

Constructions: The star is built for an audience to identify with, so people can differenciate between stars and decide why you like them or not.

Hegemony: Leadership or dominace. We relate to the star because they have features that we admire or share. Develops from admiration to idolization. People sometimes try to replicate what they like about the star , this can sometimes be a negative.

Laura Mulvey- Representation theory

Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze Theory

Laura Mulvey's theory is based on how the audience view women. The theory is based on a straight mans p.o.v and how the use of cinematography and angles can portray women as sexual objects. The cinematography emphasises the curves on a womans body.
How women are shown on music videos is how men think women should look (the ideal).Typically a man emerges as a dominant with power.

The male gaze describes how the audience or viewer is put into the perspective of a straight man.
Women view themselves through the eyes of a man.

Songs that prove this theory:

Calvin Harris-Summer
This screen shot shows a woman laid on a bed in her underwear, the cinematography and angle of this shot shows off the womans curves and this video is shot from a straight mans p.o.v, this shot shows the woman as a sexual object.

Shakira+Rihanna- Can't remember to forget you
This shot shows Shakira laid on a bed, which is a common convention in music videos for objectifying women and showing them in a sexual way to please straight men. She is wearing heals and has makeup on, this displays the the audience how the 'perfect' woman should look.

John legend-All of Me
Again, in this music video the woman is shown in bed, the camera angles show her in a sexual way as well as the mise en scene displaying her body slightly covered by a blanket.

Downfalls of Mulvey's theory
Even though women are seen as sexual objects  they may feel powerful and desirable by being seen as beautiful both both men and women.
The media has also influenced how women are viewed and it is hard to change perceptions.

3 Textual Analysis' of videos including LIIAR

Magic-Rude

L-The narrative behind this video is of the 'Tristan+Iseult'- genre, a singer in a band wants to marry the love of his life who is a rich mans daughter, her father  loves his daughter and doesn't think he is good enough for her (creating a love triangle) and is getting in the way of their love. The mise en scene includes locations of a band performance in a garage which is an American convention of 'band practice' in the garage. The edits in this music video are to the beat of the song, this video shows montage editing.

Another location is set in the fathers house, we can tell he is rich/posh by the fancy house and dinner, as well as the families costume which consists of suits and ties, dresses and heals. We can see that the lead singer isn't very rich by the casual clothing he wears and he is a very chilled out person by the way he wears a red beanie on his wedding day as well as his run down old car.
I-In this music video it shows ideology of love, the fact that they are both in love with each other but her father doesn't agree and tries to stop her from seeing him, we can see the ideology of love through the mise en scene, they are both in bed together laughing and he is singing to her which connotes romance.

Also we see them both in a wedding costume which conveys that they want to be together forever and aren't listening to her parents.

I-Institution, the band Magic are signed to a major record label, Sony Music Entertainment. This means this video/song is created for a mass audience worldwide.
A-The target audience for this music video is people who like reggae, also people who like the narrative in this video, the video is about love therefore most of the target audience will be female ranging from the age of 16-35.Due to the fact magic are signed to a major label this music video will been seen by a mass audience.
R-The representation of this video is showing love, the narrative conveys love to the audience. This band is represented as a chilled/laid back band, the way they are performing in a garage goes with the reggae chilled vibe of this music video and this is how the band want to be presented to the audience/ their fans.

Rihanna-Only girl in the world

L-This pop video only has performance, the singer Rihanna dances and lip syncs to the lyrics,in terms of cinematography the use of close ups are used to show emotion as well as to show the audience detail on the artists faces.
Long shots are used to show the audience a full length shot, this shows what kind of outfits they have on, as the target audience for pop is mostly teenagers, knowing what the artists are wearing is very important and people look at Rihanna for inspiration.

The editing in this video is montage editing, the edits are quite fast, and to the beat, editing to the beat makes the video flow and the cuts all fit together.
The mise en scene in this video includes a field and a cliff top, the secludedness of this video connotes 'being the only girl in the world' referencing to the same of the song, as she is the only one in shot conveys she is the only girl there, the cliff top location is used when she says 'only girl in the world' this shot conveys the power Rihanna has.

I-The ideology of this video shows love, she wants her love to teat her like she's the only girl in the world and she wants to be loved. We can see the ideology of this from the locations and the meanings they connote, like the fact we don't see any other girls in the video, only her which reflects the lyrics, the way she is on the cliff looking out onto the world as if she has won the battle of love and wants him to only love her.

I- Rihanna is signed to a major record label (Universal) attracting a mass audience, this means her videos have to attract a mass audience.

A- The target audience for this video is pop and R&B fans, Rihannas clothing, hair and makeup in this video will attract teenage girls as Rihannas style is individual and unique with her bright red hair, young girls will want to copy her, meaning they will have to watch her videos and the way she portrays herself on camera.

R-The representation of this video is love (this is a popular genre for pop/R&B videos)  Rihanna has been represented in a sexualised way, this is attracting an audience. Based on Laura Mulvey's Male gaze theory Rihanna is portrayed as a sexual object due to the provocative dance movements and camera angles shown in her videos, Rihanna is displayed in a way to please men.The costume she is wearing is short and the way long shots are used to view her legs aswell the scene where she is against a flowered bush aslo conveys sexuality and all adds up to the way she is presented to the public and her identity.

5 Seconds of Summer-Anmesia

L-The lyrics to this video are of the Romeo and Juliet narrative, where it is a love story but they have been taken away from each other because of a breakup. The singers in this song want to forget about the memories they have together because it is too painful. The narrative behind this video is reliving
the memories they have for example the scene where they are in the car laughing together. The mise en scene in this video shows a living room in which the band are sat down against the sofa lip syncing and showing sadness in their expressions to connect to the lyrics in the song 'Im not fine at all', in terms of editing their is a swirled, dream like effect linking with the lyrics 'tell me this is just a dream' the way in which the lyrics and video are linked together make it easy for the audience to understand.

I-The ideology of this music video is that they are reliving the memories together and then cutting to a performance aspect which contains lipsync, the emiton held on their face conveys sadness which is the main ideology of this video.

I-5 seconds of summer are signed to a major label (Universal) this means they are shown in the mainstream pop world and on chart shows, consequently they have to conform to a certian genre suitable to be played on mainstrem chart shows able to have a mass audience.
A-The audience for this video is for people who have just gone through a breakup or for people who are fans of the band and the pop-punk genre.Due to the fact the band are signed to a major label (Universal) means they have more exposure and will attract a mass audience.
R-This band are represented in a fun/innocent way. The narrative shows flashbacks of fun times they had together therefore connoting that they are a fun band to the audience, also they come across as a clean-cut band, we dont see any illegal things happening in the video. Tessa Perkins stereotype theory suggests that, stereotypically, teenagers are 'hoodies'.A band like this who are represtented in this clean-cut way will challenge these stereotypes therefore attracting a larger audience. However this is a stereotype within a stereotype because although this band dress in a rebellious way which piercings and ripped jeans they come across as fun teenagers.
