What is a stereotype? A stereotype is when someone/ a group is given a label based on what they look like/ how they act, and then conform to certain ideologies of the group.
We stereotype people to put them into catagories they look like they fit in/ we understand stereotypes to fit into society. There are stereotypes within a stereotype for example, a 'Geek' could be 'cool' or 'boring'. Stereotypes are based on media expectations.
Stereotyping is not a simple process and contains a number of assumptions that can be challenged. Stereotypes are not always bad, they can be held about ones own group and they are not always false.
Different groups of people in institutions (stereotypes).
e.g. Youths- 'hoodies' riots in London in the media which were photographed. Now all hoodies are seen as bad people.
Youths- GCSE results are good so positive things are heard in society.
The same stereotype is now seen in two different ways, a positive and a negative.
.People assume that stereotypes are directed to the lower class which is not true.
.We base our understandings on the things we don't know about.
.Stereotypes can develop, once you have a stereotype its hard to change.
.Stereotypes must have some truth otherwise they wouldn't exist.
.Stereotypes can be wrong/ negative concepts.
.People will hold stereotypes.
.Peoples behaviour will change towards a stereotype.
